Most poker games also require a player to make a forced bet. A forced bet can be a blind bet, an ante, or a bet that the player does not have the right to make. A player who bluffs by making a bet that is not legitimate is referred to as a bluffer. However, a player who bluffs by making an ill-advised bet is considered a cheat and is out of the game.
Some games require a player to check or raise before making their bet. If a player checks, he stays in without making a bet. If a player raises, he must match the previous bettor’s bet by placing chips in the pot. The first player to raise is said to “raised.”
A player who folds, or declines to raise, is called a drop. If a player chooses to fold, he must discard his hand and lose any chips in the pot. Similarly, a player who chooses to stand pat is referred to as a stand.
