Before a hand is dealt, each player is assigned a certain amount of chips. These chips are the same size as the last chip placed in the pot by the previous bettor. If the player has more than the initial amount, he may continue to bet. He can also raise the bet of the previous bettor. Generally, the player who has the highest hand is the winner.
Once the cards are dealt, the players begin to bet. The turn to bet passes to the next player. As the round continues, each player shows his cards and matches or raises the bet of the previous bettor. When all the cards are checked, the betting interval ends.
Each player can discard up to three cards. Some poker variants allow the player to discard more than three cards. During the betting interval, the player can make a bet to raise the total amount of the pot. This is known as the ante.

After the final round of betting, the pot is won by the player with the highest-ranking poker hand. The winning hand can be a five of a kind, a straight, or any other hand that beats the hand of the lowest ranking hand.
